Rural Motivation Programme (RMP), a unit of KSSS started its functions in 1982 with headquarters at Azhagiamandapam. In view of the bifurcation of the Diocese, the RMP was divided into two Units and the Unit pertaining to the Kottar Diocese was established at Nagercoil in the year 2004.
Target People
Agricultural labourers, wage workers and rural women.
Objectives
- To organize the families involved in agriculture and related activities
- To promote eco-friendly and sustainable agrarian systems and appropriate farming
- To inculcate the habit of thrift and small savings
- To establish linkages with other resource systems and marketing networks
Core Activities
- Organizing women and agricultural labourers at the village level into groups
- Organizing Self-Help Groups
- Federating the groups at block level
- Imparting training to trainers, women and agricultural labourers
- Promoting small savings
- Creating self-employment opportunities
- Providing credit facilities for the education of the children of the members
- Utilizing the Government schemes for the economic growth of the members
Problems to be addressed
RMP has a long history of 24 years. During this period, it has strengthened the sangams, federations and entered into the process of people’s empowerment. However, it is yet to reach out to a significant number of women of this district. Most of the women are still under the clutches of male dominated social structures and practices.
